These past few months have been busy and creative ones. I've made a whole lot of new jewelry designs, new papercuts and paintings. So, therefore there's been a lot of updates and announcements on this blog! :)

Tonight I have one more update to share with you: some new lockets, pendants, bracelets and brooches which found their place in my second shop on Etsy. In this shop I sell may paintings and jewelry featuring the images of my paintings. (In my original shop I sell my Papercut Art & Jewelry featuring my papercut designs.)

Meet Imogen

I've just finished my new painting, photographed it and here she is... ready to be introduced. So, please meet Imogen...

Beautiful, fearless, wild and full of life, Imogen is a flapper, an eccentric, a brilliant thinker, always seeking inspiration, adventure and pushing the boundaries of society.

Whether she's dancing the night away in Jazz Age London, debating philosophy with the great minds in her castle in Scotland, or driving wildly through the magnificent plains of Africa, one thing is certain - Imogen is enjoying her life to the fullest.

Meet Annabel

As promised, here is my newest painting... called simply "Annabel"...

I like to think that Annabel's betrothed, her love and soul-mate is away at sea. He's a fearless explorer, traveling into faraway regions in search of unknown. She respects and admires deeply his vocation but nevertheless misses him terribly. The faraway look of concern in her eyes tells all. Annabel is a writer, currently lost in the strange distant worlds, imaginary eerie moors and deep fantastical seas. From her looks you might think her serious but she's well known for her wit and humor. And her scones, well, her scones are legendary.

I was going to offer this portrait for sale, but have become very attached to it. I think Annabel will stay in the family.

Inspiration board

Just a few snapshots from my studio today of an inspiration board and a glimpse of a portrait I'm working on. My inspiration board consists mostly of old portraits and vintage photos, getting myself into a portrait painting mood...

For the past several years I've been mosty concentrating on my papercut art and my jelwelry collection but lately I've been wanting to paint again. So, here is the initial drawing of my newest painting...

The painting is almost finished and hopefully will be ready to show tomorrow.

It's been truly fun to get my brushes out and get into the painting again.

Key

I've been wondering how and where to display this 6 inch skeleton key I recently acquired...

It's old and rusty and large. Looks like an old castle key, or... an old Victorian house key?

So, I figured the best place for it will be...

... next to my papercut of a Victorian house. Perhaps as a hope and a dare that one day we will live in one? :) Been daydreaming again.

And the mysterious dark haired lady in my painting above sure looks like she could live in this old Victorian house. Or also dreams of living in one. House full of heavy curtains, Persian rugs and chaise lounges. High-ceilinged kitchens and wild lush gardens. And lots of outdoor parties.

No parties for us this weekend, though. Just some closet cleaning and catching up with home things. And, some relaxing, too.

December Exhibit

My papercuts, jewelry and paintings will be in a show throughout December (Dec 5 - Dec 30) at Backstage Salon and Gallery on 2134 Polk Street, San Francisco. My pieces will be on display together with the artwork by Kevin Brown and Jacquie Mortz.

We will have two Open Studio style receptions on Sunday, December 13 & Sunday, December 20 - noon to 5 p.m. If you're in the neighborhood, please stop by.

My Portraits

When I'm not papercuting and practicing Scottish accents with Terry, I can also be found painting portraits...

Arent they the cutest? The rosy cheeks, the sweet smiles, the polka dots and pink bows, the t-shirts!  It was a thrill painting them!

I love dogs, and she was truly the sweetest. With her head slightly leaning to the left, giving her also a very wise expression, don't you think?

While I was doing the portrait, Alex sent me cigars he liked smoking, so that I would paint it just right. I have yet to smoke them! :)

This portrait was commissioned by a woman as a surprise for her husband. He used to trick ride as a kid, back in the 50's, and fondly remembered those days. He always dreamed of trick riding in front of an audience, but never did. She had a photo of him on a horse, so she asked me to put a little audience :) in the background. The audience was quite impressed, let me tell you!

More on murals...

Thank you all for the mural love and your wonderful comments. It is much appreciated!

 

 

 

I still don't know the details about the size of the mural I'll be painting or what the theme will be. I'm supposed to first take a short trip to New Orleans (for a couple of days only and without the husband, which is going to be the hardest thing ever, as we have not been separated for more than five minutes since we got married!) to see the place and discuss with the owners all the details and their desires. Then come back and work on some ideas, make sketches... etc. After that is done, and the house is ready to receive me I'll be off again to New Orleans, to paint the mural. And this time husband will come with! I will be taking photos of my progress and hopefully be able to post them on the blog, as well as the final result. I look forward to it!

 

In the meantime I am going to check out some murals in San Francisco. There are some fantastic ones in Coit Tower, just a couple of blocks from our house. I've already seen them a couple of years ago, but am absolutely planing to revisit. The Coit Tower murals were carried out under the auspices of the The Public Works of Art Project - a program to employ artists, as part of the New Deal, during the Great Depression.

 

 

These murals - some controversial - were created by 25 of California's leading artists of the 1930s and reflect scenes of the Great Depression, landscapes, farm workers, industries, a stylish soiree, and vibrant city life.

To paint a mural in New Orleans...

... how wonderful that would be...

 

Well, that is exactly what I'll be doing soon! I was commissioned to paint a mural in a gorgeous mansion in the Garden District of New Orleans. I am so thrilled and excited about it. It's a creative dream come true. Not only will I have to spend some time in that magical city but I will be doing something that I truly wanted to do for a long time... painting a mural. What a wonderful, challenging, grand thing. I will be wearing overalls, Like Diego Rivera...

... I will have paint in my hair (well, I already have paint in my hair, so that won't be so much different). I will create some large, ceiling-high art.

 

I don't know the exact time yet when I'll be going to New Orleans, as the family is doing some major construction work on the house that they only recently purchased. But when it does happen, which could be in about a month or two, I will be temporarily transferring my papercut shop to NOLA. The shop will be operating almost as usual (I will ship every day), but only selected papercuts will be in stock for a month or so until I am painting. I'm not sure about jewelry yet, it will all depend on how much time I will have to make things. SO, if you had a piece in mind, be it a papercut or a piece of jewelry, it might be better to get it now. The same thing goes for commissioned work - if you'd like to commission a papercut or a painting, there is no better time than now!:)

 

Did I say how excited I am that I will be painting a mural? :D

 

Here are some fantastic murals from around the world...

 

 

The dining room of Helena Rubinstein is a dream, with creamy walls and Salvador Dalí's three-part mural of morning, noon and night (only part of the surrealist trinity is visible here). And I adore the lucite chairs around the table! I mention them in one of my previous post {here}.

 

 

When redesigning Le Meuricein Paris, Philippe Starck took the hotel’s most iconic patron as his inspiration: Salvador Dalí. When it came time to choose a painter to create a ceiling mural for the hotel’s restaurant, Le Dali, Starck ended up selecting his daughter Ara’s anonymous submission.
